The lesson here is if you're not constrained by publishing deadlines, allow plenty of time for trial assembly and double-check everything. Unfortunately, Murphy's Law reared its ugly head: With one day to go before the engine was scheduled back on the dyno, mock-up revealed that, although the block was indeed now square, the piston deck clearance was still 0.018 down at TDC, yielding a less-than-optimum 9.86:1 static compression ratio. This should have raised the compression ratio from last month's 9.15:1 to more than 10:1 while retaining sufficient deck thickness for any necessary milling that might be needed during a future rebuild. I am restoring my truck for the street and for show and would like to install a Comp Cams Thumpr Camshaft but I dont know what all modificaions I would need or if there are any needed. ![]() The original plan was to square-deck the block to ensure that its cylinder head mating surfaces were parallel to the crank centerline, then perform any additional cut required to place the new pistons 0.010 inch down in the hole at TDC. I have a rebuilt, stock 350 Small Block Chevy, with thirty thousanths over bore pistons. Hot Rod associate Ed Taylor tore apart the engine at McMillan's Speed and Fabrication, then sent the short-block back to Coast for the piston swap and head mill.
